Holiday Pay

Hands Off our Holiday Pay – Resource UK order to cough up (article from

Security staff have won a landmark case to force their employer Resource (United Kingdom) Limited to cough up 28 paid holiday days a year.

Three workers from the company, owned by outsourcing giant Resource Services Group, took their case to an employment tribunal in Northern Ireland, where around 700 staff are employed on contracts to work for the police.

The company had claimed

that paying double time for a day's leave entitled them to reduce the amount of paid leave employees get each year, but the tribunal ruled that this broke the Working Time Regulations.

Resource was ordered to pay the three workers £1,154 compensation for holiday time that had not been paid.

The cases were taken by the GMB union, which has another 66 cases pending against the company.

Regional union officer Michael Mulholland said: "These workers do an important job as part of the law enforcement community.

"The GMB considers that this ruling is a good outcome to a struggle that began more than two years ago and reflects the determination of the union to secure our members' legal rights."

Latest accounts show that Resource Services Group had an annual turnover of £146million, while chief executive David Seaton got a £367,000 pay package. The figures don't show how many days of paid holiday he gets.

We asked the firm if it would be fighting the outstanding tribunal cases but it has not replied.
