KPMG braces itself for recession by offering staff a voluntary 4 day working week and sabbatical of up to 12 a move to avoid redundancies as the economic downturn bites.

They are the first of the big accounting firms to make such a move, which is the latest sign of the economic crisis effecting the Accounting Profession.

 'If the economy gets worse this is an option that we can quickly move to rather than a knee jerk reaction when you fire a load of people,' a KPMG spokesman said.
Firms including Deloitte, Grant Thornton and PKF have recently announced plans to cut hundreds of jobs in expectation of slower revenue growth this year.
