Safer Internet Day - 9th February 2010
What is it all about?
Today is all about 'Safer Use of the Internet' which is organised by Insafe each year
It is to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones with particular emphasis this year on children and young people, however this can be equally applied to a business environment.
The campaign is entitled 'Think B4 U post' - anything anyone posts online remains there for an indefinate period and accessible for everyone, which can have serious consequences.
Last year saw several cases of employees being dismissed after they had posted derogatory comments on the Internet about their employers or the company they worked for. It is always worth reminding employees of their responsibilities and that comments that are made in the heat of the moment may stay online indefinatley, and could be viewed by precisely the person or people they don't want to see them.
Organisations can protect themselves from employees posting such negative comments via social networking sites by ensuring they have a Internet Policy or Social Networking Policy giving clear guidelines on internet, email usage.
So, take a look at your Company / Staff Hand book and check your current policy includes restrictions regarding the internet or ensure a policy in put in place
